The VMAX 10, 20 and 40K storage systems deliver scalability and high availability while giving functionality for transformation to the hybrid cloud. The EMC VMAX storage systems have a Virtual Matrix Architecture and is a unique way to build storage systems that go beyond the physical constraints of existing architectures by scaling system resources through building blocks which are EMC VMAX engines.
A single 10, 20 or 40K engine can support the foundation for high availability in any of their respective storage systems. Each VMAX system contains two VMAX directors and redundant interfaces to the EMC Virtual Matrix interconnect. Each VMAX director consolidates front-end, global memory, and back-end functions, enabling direct memory access to data for optimised I/O operations.
To provide scalable performance and high availability the EMC VMAX engines are interconnected by a set of multiple active fabrics. Additional VMAX engines can be added to provide a linear scale-out of VMAX system resources and provisioned non-disruptively. The Virtual Matrix architecture is designed to accomodate a number of additional engines. These engines can be geographically located anywhere in a data centre enabling an unprecedented level of scalability of infrastructure services with a single point of management.
