The EMC VNX first generation storage devices have entered into the end of their manufacturer warranty period and finding a suitable sustainable maintenance solution may be an important consideration. Considerable investment has been made whether this be a mid range VNX5100, 5300 or 5500 to a high end VNX5700 or 7500. Finding a practical solution to maximise the return of this investment is important. BASE IT are able to provide a viable, practical and cost effective way to continue supporting these systems without introducing service risk.
The VNX platform, which is a unified system combining the Clariion SAN and Celerra NAS technology with updated architecture, was released by EMC in the first quarter of 2011. However, we still see a number of organisations still using either the Clariion or Celerra platforms individually. The VNX operating system is built on the same OS architectures used by the Clariion and Celerra systems, which use FLARE and DART respectively. The VNX system uses the new management GUI of Unisphere and not Navisphere which you may still find some Clariion systems using today.
The entry level VNX systems which is the basic VNX-e 3100, 3150 and 3300 were a cost effective way for IT managers with limited funds to sample the new technology from EMC, but it may no longer make financial sense for continued support from the manufacturer on entry level systems and sourcing an alternative support solution for these systems may make budgetary sense.
